Things to do in Bormio in August and September 2026: events, hiking, thermal baths and ideas for families and couples
August and September are two wonderful months to discover Bormio and the Upper Valtellina. The days are still ideal for exploring the mountains, hiking at altitude, cycling over legendary Alpine passes and enjoying lunch in a mountain hut, while the local calendar is filled with festivals, outdoor experiences, food events and wellness activities.
If you are planning a holiday in Bormio in summer 2026, we have selected some of the most interesting things to do from 10 August onwards, with ideas for families with children, active couples and guests looking for a slower holiday combining walks, thermal baths, culture and traditional Valtellina flavours.
Our advice at Miramonti Park Hotel? Do not try to fit everything into your holiday. Alternate an important day in the mountains with a relaxing afternoon, a walk through the historic centre of Bormio or a leisurely dinner. It is probably the best way to really enjoy this part of the Alps.
Guided hikes in Santa Caterina Valfurva: pay only for the gondola ticket
One of the most interesting opportunities of summer 2026 is the programme of guided hikes in Santa Caterina Valfurva. The Santa Caterina-Vallalpe gondola remains open until 6 September 2026 and, on selected days, Mountain Leaders are made available by the lift company at no additional cost: participants only need to purchase the gondola ticket.
It is a particularly attractive option for visitors who do not know the area well, as it allows them to explore the mountains with experienced guides and discover natural, historical and cultural details that can easily be missed when hiking independently.
Family in Nature: an easy mountain experience for families
On Tuesday 11, 18 and 25 August and Tuesday 1 September, families can join Family in Nature, an excursion specifically designed for adults travelling with children.
The route is approximately 3 km long, takes around 3 hours and includes about 150 metres of elevation gain. It is classified as easy.
Alpine flowers, rocks, marmots, grazing animals and high-altitude landscapes become part of a small journey of discovery. It is one of our favourite recommendations for guests visiting Bormio with children who would like to experience the mountains without tackling a demanding hike.
Walking through History: traces of the First World War
On Thursday 13, 20 and 27 August and Thursday 3 September, the programme continues with Walking through History.
This approximately 7 km route, with around 500 metres of elevation gain, crosses areas marked by the First World War, including military positions, trenches and other historical remains.
It is particularly suitable for adult and senior couples who are comfortable hiking and for anyone who enjoys combining mountain scenery with local history. The difficulty is classified as medium and dogs are not allowed.
Monte Sobretta: reach a real Alpine summit
For active couples and experienced hikers, Saturday 15, 22 and 29 August offers the opportunity to climb Monte Sobretta.
Thanks to the special early opening of the gondola at 8.00 am, participants can quickly reach altitude before continuing towards a summit of almost 3,300 metres.
The route is approximately 10 km long, requires around 6 hours of walking and involves about 650 metres of elevation gain. Free registration is compulsory by 5.00 pm on the preceding Thursday.
Edelweiss Trekking: Sunday in the Valle dell'Alpe
On Sundays 16, 23 and 30 August, visitors can join the Edelweiss Trekking: an approximately 5 km hike through small Alpine lakes, glacial environments and the landscapes of the Valle dell'Alpe.
Along the way it may be possible to spot marmots, chamois and, with a little luck, even a bearded vulture.
The route has approximately 200 metres of elevation gain and is classified as medium difficulty, making it a good choice for guests who want to spend half a day in the mountains without committing to a long ascent.
Practical information: booking is recommended for Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday excursions, while registration for the Saturday Monte Sobretta hike is compulsory. For information, guests can contact the guides on +39 351 8895411 or the lift company on +39 0342 925116.
13 August: Sunrise Concert in Santa Caterina
One of the most atmospheric experiences of the entire summer takes place on Thursday 13 August 2026: the Sunrise Concert in Santa Caterina Valfurva.
The gondola opens exceptionally early at 6.15 am. The first musical performance takes place on the ridge at approximately 2,800 metres, followed by a musical journey featuring strings, accordion and clarinet towards Sunny Valley.
Breakfast is scheduled at around 8.00 am, followed at 8.30 am by a concert performed by the I Filarmonici Veneti orchestra.
We particularly recommend this experience to couples: waking before sunrise, travelling into the mountains while the valley is still quiet and listening to live music surrounded by Alpine peaks is very different from an ordinary evening concert.
An easy day at altitude with lunch at Sunny Valley
You do not need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy the mountains around Santa Caterina. From 22 August to 6 September, the Sali con Gusto experience combines a return gondola journey with a dedicated lunch menu at Sunny Valley.
It is a particularly good choice for families with younger children, senior couples or anyone who would simply like to spend a few hours above 2,000 metres, enjoy an easy walk and stop for lunch in the mountains.
There are also many easy trails that can be explored independently, including walks that can be combined with lunch in a mountain hut.
Once you arrive at Miramonti Park Hotel, ask our team for advice: depending on the age of your children, your fitness level, the weather and the type of day you would like to experience, we can help you choose a suitable walk.
Bormio by e-bike: the Tour delle 3 Gondole
For guests bringing their own bike or renting an e-bike, one of the most unusual experiences in the area is the Tour delle 3 Gondole.
The route connects Valdidentro, Bormio and Santa Caterina using the three main gondola lifts of the Upper Valtellina.
The complete itinerary covers approximately 73 km by bike and combines forest roads, cycle paths, trails and single tracks. It is particularly suitable for e-bikes or experienced cyclists and requires good bike-handling skills on the descents.
It is one of our favourite recommendations for active couples who want to dedicate an entire day to discovering the area on two wheels.
Bormio Terme: thermal baths, Aufguss, scrubs and thermal mud
Mountains and wellness naturally go together in Bormio. Until 31 August 2026, Bormio Terme offers a programme of complimentary wellness experiences including Aufguss rituals, scrubs and thermal mud treatments.
The Aufguss takes place in the Panoramic Sauna of the Wellness +16 area and is particularly suitable for couples and for guests looking to recover after hiking or cycling.
The thermal mud experience, using thermal water and clay, takes place on the panoramic terrace near the Stelvio pool, while the scrub is offered in the steam bath of the Family Wellness area.
- Monday: Aufguss at 11.00 am and 4.00 pm; thermal mud at 5.00 pm.
- Wednesday: thermal mud at 11.00 am; Aufguss at 4.00 pm and 6.00 pm; scrub at 5.00 pm.
- Thursday: Aufguss at 11.00 am and 4.00 pm; thermal mud at 5.00 pm.
- Friday: thermal mud at 11.00 am and 5.00 pm; Aufguss at 4.00 pm and 6.00 pm.
- Saturday: Aufguss at 11.00 am, 4.00 pm and 6.00 pm; scrub at 5.00 pm.
- Sunday: scrub at 11.00 am, 12.00 noon and 5.00 pm; Aufguss at 4.00 pm.
Bormio Terme with children
Bormio Terme is also one of the easiest ways to spend a few relaxing hours as a family, especially when the weather is uncertain. Thermal pools, areas dedicated to younger guests and the Family Wellness facilities make it easy to alternate mountain adventures with a quieter day.
Among the activities designed for younger guests is also Wibit, a floating obstacle course made up of five modules and reserved for guests under 16.
The programme is seasonal, so before planning your visit we recommend checking directly with Bormio Terme whether Wibit is available during your stay.
Events not to miss in Bormio from 10 to 31 August 2026
13 August: Carmina Burana in Bormio
After the Sunrise Concert in Santa Caterina, 13 August can end back in Bormio with the Orchestra Vivaldi concert featuring Carmina Burana, scheduled from 9.00 pm at the Pentagono Center.
It is particularly interesting for couples and for guests who enjoy combining days in the mountains with cultural events.
Ferragosto between hiking, music and nature
The Ferragosto weekend offers a wide choice of activities.
On 15 August, guests can climb Monte Sobretta, follow the Upper Forni Glaciological Trail or experience the Ferrata ai Forni combined with an aperitif. The evening programme also includes Sunset Yoga and various events in the villages of the Upper Valtellina.
Early risers can start 16 August with The Dawn Skyline at Bormio 3000, while Santa Caterina hosts the Edelweiss Trekking.
19-23 August: Parco in Festa
One of the events we most recommend to families is Parco in Festa, taking place in the centre of Bormio from 19 to 23 August and dedicated to the Stelvio National Park.
The programme includes meetings with researchers and experts, excursions, guided visits, creative activities, children's workshops, performances and a market featuring local and artisan products.
It is an excellent opportunity to introduce children to the Alpine environment in an entertaining way, while adults can learn more about one of Italy's most fascinating protected mountain areas.
22 August: La Serata dei Vini
On the evening of Saturday 22 August, Piazza Cavour and the Kuerc host La Serata dei Vini, the Wine Evening.
After a day in the mountains, it is an excellent event for couples who would like to spend an evening in Bormio's historic centre and discover more about Valtellina's wine culture.
27-30 August: four days dedicated to the legendary Alpine passes
For cyclists and mountain lovers, the end of August is one of the most interesting periods of the summer thanks to Enjoy Stelvio Valtellina, when some of the most iconic roads in the Upper Valtellina are temporarily closed to motorised traffic.
- 27 August: Laghi di Cancano road, from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm.
- 28 August: Mortirolo Pass, from 8.30 am to 12.00 noon.
- 29 August: Stelvio Pass, from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm, together with the Scalata Cima Coppi.
- 30 August: Gavia Pass, from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm.
The initiative is free, non-competitive and does not require registration. For anyone planning an active cycling holiday in Bormio, riding Stelvio, Gavia, Mortirolo or Cancano without motorised traffic is undoubtedly an experience worth adding to the itinerary.
September 2026 in Bormio: fewer crowds, mountains and special events
September is often underestimated, yet for many guests it is one of the most enjoyable times of the year to visit Bormio.
Temperatures become milder, the mountain landscape slowly begins to change colour and the area still offers an interesting calendar of activities and events.
1 and 3 September: the final guided hikes in Santa Caterina
Before the summer gondola season comes to an end, Family in Nature returns on 1 September, while the final Walking through History excursion takes place on 3 September.
The Ferrata ai Forni is also scheduled for 1 September, while activities such as Hatha Yoga, Pilates and guided visits to the Braulio cellars continue during the first days of the month.
4-6 September: Giro del Confinale and the final gondola weekend
From 4 to 6 September, the programme includes the Giro del Confinale with Marco Confortola.
On 5 September, visitors can also choose the Ferrata ai Forni, Sunset Yoga and the seventh edition of the Coro Stelvio Festival.
Sunday 6 September is also the final day of the summer gondola season in Santa Caterina, making it an excellent opportunity for one last day at altitude before autumn begins.
6 September 2026: Italy's longest Pizzoccherata and a first for Miramonti
If there is one food event to put in your September calendar, it is the Pizzoccherata più lunga d'Italia, Italy's longest Pizzoccherata, taking place in Bormio on Sunday 6 September 2026.
The historic centre, from Piazza del Kuerc to Piazzetta San Vitale, is transformed by an extraordinary 800-metre-long communal table.
Guests take their seats from 12.30 pm and at 1.00 pm the sound of the historic Bajona bell signals the beginning of the pizzoccheri service along the entire table.
Traditional Valtellina products, local wines, music, dancing and entertainment accompany the lunch.
This year's edition will be particularly special for us: for the first time, Miramonti Park Hotel will have its own table at the Pizzoccherata together with our partner restaurant Crocus at Alpen Hotel.
Our guests will therefore have the opportunity to experience one of Bormio's most iconic events together with us.
If you are staying at Miramonti during this period, ask Reception for information: we will be happy to help you organise your participation.
11 and 12 September: Ortles Haute Route Trail
Trail-running enthusiasts can look forward to a new major event on 11 and 12 September 2026: the Ortles Haute Route, with both the start and finish in Bormio.
Alongside the demanding 120 km main race, the programme also includes the 35 km Raethia Trail and the OH Short Trail, covering 12 km with approximately 600 metres of elevation gain.
The shorter distance is designed to make trail running more accessible to athletes who are not ready for an ultra-distance race.
19 September: another traffic-free Stelvio day
Opportunities for cyclists do not end in August.
On Saturday 19 September, Enjoy Stelvio Valtellina returns to the Stelvio Pass. The road from the Bormio side, starting near Bagni Vecchi, will be closed to motorised traffic from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm.
It is an event worth considering for a late-summer cycling break in Bormio.
20 September: Festa del Boscaiolo
On Sunday 20 September, Valdidentro hosts the Valdidentro Mountain Feast - Festa del Boscaiolo, a free event dedicated to mountain culture and local traditions.
One of the most characteristic parts of the programme is the Triathlon del Boscaiolo, with skill competitions inspired by traditional forestry work, accompanied by music, food and festivities.
It is an authentic local event and also suitable for families.
26 September: listen to the red deer rut in Val Zebrù
As autumn approaches, the way visitors experience the Stelvio National Park also changes.
On Saturday 26 September, a guided excursion in Val Zebrù is dedicated to listening for the calls of red deer during the rutting season.
The meeting point is scheduled for 2.00 pm in Fantelle and the route can reach approximately 14 km return, with around 450 metres of elevation gain.
It is a particularly atmospheric experience for nature lovers who would like to discover one of the most fascinating moments in the life cycle of Alpine wildlife.
27 September: Giornata della Solidarietà
On Sunday 27 September, the Pentagono in Bormio hosts the Giornata della Solidarietà, or Solidarity Day, with a non-competitive walk and a mountain-bike ride also open to children and teenagers.
