What Makes the Thermal Water Special
The water of Bormio is known for its unique properties and healing powers: It is characterized by a special composition of many minerals. The water comes from a total of nine springs located at various altitudes from 1,280m to 1,421m above sea level. This thermal water is one of the few south of the Alps that is also naturally warm. Temperatures range between 37°C and 43°C and vary depending on the season. In summer and during the rainy season, the water tends to be cooler because rainwater can enter during that time. During the winter months, the frost ensures that the water temperature remains unchanged. This warmth is not only soothing and helps regenerate, but it is also very good for relaxing muscles and promoting blood circulation. The water has also been recognized by the Italian Ministry of Health for its healing effects, which is why it is used for treatments at Bormio Terme. Therefore, a trip to a spa to enjoy the unique thermal waters of Bormio is just the thing, because the therapeutic effects combined with the historical context and the relaxation factor offer endless relaxation and ensure a great stay.
A Look at History
In reality, the earliest evidence of thermal water in the Bormio region dates back to pre-Roman times. During the demolition of a church, a relief was found depicting a water god. Scientists suppose this relief likely came from a place of worship of the ancient Rhaetians. It has been dated between the 5th/4th century and the 1st century BC. Pliny the Elder is also said to have mentioned and praised the Bormio Baths in his works, and the Bormio Baths played an important role in the Middle Ages as well. Thanks to some documents and historical evidence, we know, for example, that monks ran a Hospitium balneorum. We have also learned of the construction of the so-called “upper baths,” which were used to harness water from the higher San Marino springs. This means that the baths probably had many visitors already 1,000 years ago. One of the most famous guests of that time was Leonardo da Vinci. He visited Bormio in 1493 and even mentioned the baths in the Codex Atlanticus with the words: “At the top of the Valtellina lies Burmi. The baths are in Burmi.” And still today, Bormio has many visitors who enjoy the unique thermal water.Main Differences Among the 3 Thermal Establishments
Bormio’s thermal baths offer unique and distinct experiences, each with its own special characteristics. Bormio Terme is ideal for families and those seeking a more accessible and versatile thermal experience, with the possibility of shorter entries of 2 and a half hours, a thermal swimming pool suitable for both adults and children, thanks also to shallow pools designed specifically for the little ones. On the other hand, Bagni Vecchi stands out for its rich history dating back to Roman times, requiring a minimum stay of 5 hours to fully immerse yourself in the tranquility and beauty of the place. Access, limited to visitors over 14 years of age and by reservation, ensures an exclusive atmosphere. Guests can explore the sweat cave and enjoy an unparalleled view from the outdoor tub. Bagni Nuovi shares some of the features of Bagni Vecchi, such as exclusivity and historical significance, but stands out for its more modern style, a greater variety of pools and outdoor areas, offering a one-of-a-kind thermal experience that blends tradition and innovation.Where Are the Baths Located?
